This form is for applicants within the Anglican Diocese of Nelson.

Scholarships are being considered for study / course that begins in 2027. No guarantee can be offered for scholarships related to study programs that are longer than two years. Recipients of Scholarships will be expected to contribute to gatherings and training events in the Diocese during the period of scholarship. Conditions of the Scholarship will be set out in a covenant agreement describing the expectations of other involvement in the Diocese.

For Study Scholarships you will need to provide
• Details of the proposed study course.
• Two references (including vicar / minister) from people who can speak to your character and engagement in a local church setting.
• Confirmation that you have discussed your study plans with Diocese Ministry Education Coordinators Spanky Moore or Simon Martin.
• A brief description of how your study topic will contribute to the mission of the church in this Diocese.
• For those wishing to study at Bishopdale College that you have discussed this with either the College Director, Dean or Internship Coordinator.
• Confirmation that you have assessed your access to Student Loan and Student Allowance through Study Link: https://www.studylink.govt.nz/online-services/eligibility/
The funding is limited and therefore applications will be prioritised for those which directly impact the five key areas that were identified in the Diocese Revitalisation Project:
1. Growth in ministries with children, youth, young adults and families.
2. An increased confidence in evangelism and disciple-making.
3. Pioneering ways to connect meaningfully with society.
4. More women and lay people in church and community leadership.
5. Those on the pathway towards ordination for church leadership.

Applications are welcome from both ordained clergy and lay members of the Anglican Church in the Nelson Diocese, with the aim of growing the Church’s leadership capacity for mission and ministry.
Any additional Financial Support Grants (previously known as living expenses) will only be given to those where there is a significant financial barrier to study.
Applications are welcome from any Anglican member of a Diocesan worshipping community who plans to do theological academic study within the key areas for revitalisation. Applicants are asked to bear the following in mind:
• Funds are limited and not every application will be successful.
• Some grants may part-fund a course of study.
• Study programs through Bishopdale College will be considered in favour of study through other institutions.
• Courses of study must be for academic credit from an approved institution.
• Applicants for whom finances are a barrier to undertake study will be given opportunity to discuss their need for extra financial support.

Governance and Process
A dedicated committee will consider applications.
The Bishop’s Chaplain will act as administrator to develop and manage the process.
Final decisions will be made by the Bishop of Nelson, based on Scholarship Committee recommendations.
Priority will be given to lay applicants studying for the purposes of:
1. Developing ministry with children, youth, young adults and families
2. Growing evangelism and disciple-making
3. Pioneering endeavours to connect with the community
4. Advancing women and laity in church and community leadership
5. Those on the pathway towards ordination for church leadership.
The type and duration of study will also be considered in the following order:
a) Long Program – Multiple papers over multiple years
b) Short Program – Multiple papers over one or two semesters
c) Single Paper – A single paper taken in one year or semester
d) Research – For postgraduate study like Masters, Doctorate

Applications must be submitted online by 5 pm, 30 September 2026.
Decisions on scholarship applications will be communicated by 15 October 2026.

Support Grant for those facing financial barriers to study
Study can cost a significant amount of money, and the time required often hinders opportunities for employment and income. These constraints present barriers to study, particularly for those students with significant family responsibilities. There are some limited funds for financial support that might help those who are facing such barriers to study. If you would like to be considered for a Support Grant, someone from the Scholarship Committee will be in touch to discuss your situation.
